Deer hunting carries centuries of its own vocabulary. Some of it is useful, some of it is just good, and knowing it means you can read older writing on the subject without getting lost.
BuckA male fallow deer. Stag is used for red deer. With fallow, buck is correct.
DoeA female fallow deer.
FawnA young fallow in its first year.
PricketA second-year buck carrying simple unbranched spikes.
Master buckA mature, dominant buck holding a rutting stand.
HavierA castrated male deer. Rare, and usually the result of injury.
GrallochTo field dress, or the guts themselves. Scottish, and still the standard term.
SlotThe hoof print of a deer. To follow slots is to track.
FewmetsDeer droppings. Also crotels. Excellent word, genuinely old.
FrayTo thrash a sapling with antlers. The stripped tree is a fray tree.
RutThe breeding season. Peaks early to mid April in Australia.
GroanThe fallow buck's rutting call. A deep, repetitive belching croak that carries a long way.
Rutting standA fixed patch of ground a buck defends and calls from through the rut.
CastTo shed antlers, naturally, each year around October to November.
VelvetThe blood-rich skin covering growing antler.
PalmationThe flat shovel at the top of a fallow antler.
BeamThe main shaft of the antler.
Brow tineThe first, lowest point off the beam.
SpellerA small point off the trailing edge of the palm.
PronkTo bounce off all four legs at once when alarmed. Also stotting.
CrepuscularActive at dawn and dusk. How fallow live.
PellicleThe dry dark crust that forms on hung meat. Trimmed off before eating.
SilverskinThe tough fascia sheet over muscle. Comes off, always.
GambrelThe spreader bar used to hang a carcass by the hind legs.
Bachelor mobA group of bucks living together outside the rut.
HiderA fawn that lies concealed while the doe feeds elsewhere. Not abandoned. Leave it.
