Back to the trip

Before you go

Get ready

The weekend, then the mountain. The countdown to both, what's left to pack, and what's worth reading first.

Part oneFri 9 to Sun 11 October

Silent Grove

New South Wales

Till we roll out

NSW time

Your list
Getting there
Roll out early afternoon. If you're coming from further afield we meet at the Tenterfield IGA carpark and convoy the last hour in.
Already sorted
Rifles, unlimited ammo, every meal, firewood, ice, knives, sharpeners, ear plugs and water. Don't bring cash, there's nothing to spend it on.
Part twoThu 15 to Mon 19 October dates tentative

New Zealand

Southern Alps, West Coast

Till Thursday

NZ time

Your list
Getting there
Land, get picked up, and stop at a hunting and fishing store on the way through so anybody missing anything can sort it, in New Zealand dollars. Then the helicopters, weather permitting, and you are dropped in the head of the valley.
Already sorted
Rifles and ammo, permits, passes and animal tags, the helicopter both ways, the hut, all the food and every transfer from the airport. Your trophy fee is in there too, so if you get one there is nothing more to pay.

Helicopters do not fly in cloud, so either end can slide a day, and nobody argues with that.

Chuck it in the bag

Tick it off

Both packing lists off the main page, plus the few jobs worth doing before you leave. Tap a line once it's sorted. Your ticks stay on this phone.

Part one

Silent Grove

The two that matter

In the bag

If you've got them

Before you go

Leave at home

The crinkly rain shell. They hear it well before they see you. Dull colours beat bright, but camo isn't required.

Banned

Nothing, but the rifles and the drinking never overlap. Once they're away for the night, have one if you want.

Sorted for you
  • Rifles
  • Unlimited ammo
  • Every meal
  • Firewood
  • Ice
  • Knives and sharpeners
  • Ear plugs
  • Water
Part two

New Zealand

The two that matter

In the pack

There is a shop stop

We pull into a hunting and fishing store once we land, so anything you are missing or not sure about you can pick up then. It is all in New Zealand dollars, so it works out cheaper than buying it here first.

Before you fly

Leave at home

Cotton. Jeans, cotton hoodies, cotton socks. Wet cotton at altitude is a genuine problem rather than just an uncomfortable one, and it never dries in a hut.

Coming home

Question 10 on the Incoming Passenger Card is a yes. You have been in wilderness, so say so, and declare the boots.

Sorted for you
  • Rifles and ammo
  • Permits, passes and tags
  • The helicopter both ways
  • The hut
  • All the food
  • Every transfer from the airport
  • Your trophy fee

For the weekend

    For the mountain

      The app

      Get Dope on your phone

Your holds at any distance, your zero from a photo of the target, and a card for the stock. Works with no reception.

Put it on your home screen

      1. Open Dope in SafariOpen Dope
      2. Tap Share

On iOS 26 it's under the three dots next to the address bar. On older iPhones it's the square with the arrow, along the bottom.

      3. Add to Home Screen

Scroll down to it, leave Open as Web App on, then tap Add.

      4. Open it once with signal

It asks for the site password the first time. After that it works in the hills.

On Android, it's Install app in Chrome's menu.

      That's the lot.
